Ensuring A New Student Becomes A Permanent Student

Whites belts are like fragile eggs. They should be nurtured with care throughout their introductory period and then, when they join the regular class, they must continue to receive that treatment or they will disappear under the pretense of an increased work schedule or too busy homework.

Unfortunately, it’s in the transition to the group class that the egg that had been handled so gently during the introductory program is tossed into a large group with an instructor trying to juggle 15 such eggs.

The solution is to train some of your leadership team to teach the next two lessons after the introductory lessons. The introductory teacher should introduce and build up this instructor to the new students. “Next week you get to work with Ms. Smith. She’s in our leadership training program and she will help you work your way into the group.”

Part of the “white belt coach” training for leadership team members should be to seek out the students after their first or second introductory class and introduce themselves and let them know they are looking forward to working with them next week.[/text_block]
